The first nothing keynote was held today at 2 pm. This was their first time announcing their plans for the future to the public. We were left with a new ecosystem and a new phone. They also announced the biggest public investment program for the company ever! This is what happened.
The Story so far
Apple, since 2007, has focused on a unified ecosystem. All their products aim to work seamlessly with each other. If you own AirPods, it’s simple to stop listening to music on your iPhone and start a YouTube video on your MacBook because the connection transitions from one device to another without user intervention.
This feature is hard to find on Android, so it has always been a huge setback. There is too much rivalry in the Android space for it to challenge Apple successfully. This is because the Android space is just a bunch of different companies doing their own thing. Rather than aiming to work in a unified way, they work alone. Nothing announced in this event that they want to change that.
The Future
Carl Pei (the founder) is creating a unified ecosystem for Android to rival Apple with nothing. However, unlike Apple, they don’t want to make it exclusive to their products. So they’ve teamed up with Google and Samsung (and probably others) to create a unified ecosystem across different brands of Android, providing the android experience – nothing style.
They have announced nothingOS. It’s an android launcher that provides the most basic android experience with Google’s apps, whilst providing a skin that perfectly fits nothing’s design language. This launcher will be available on selected Android devices and will completely overhaul the OS to run on a new unified Android experience. It will provide new levels of connectivity to external devices, including the ear (1) headphones, AirPods and Tesla cars. They will also aim to maintain the design of the ear(1) through the operating system.

The Phone?
Furthermore, The nothing phone(1) was announced. However, we still know nothing about it (ironically). However, they’ve teamed up with Snapdragon, so we know that it will feature one of their chips. Potentially it will be displayed for all through the back of the phone if they stick with the precise design language they introduced with their ear(1) devices.
The next nothing keynote could have even more in store – more of the phone(1), ChromeOS integration or even a smartwatch. I’m sure that the nothing keynote will be the nightlight of the tech year for many years to come.
NothingOS will be released in the summer of 2022, and if it works, we could see a version of Android that could truly rival the ease of the Apple ecosystem. This could be the begging of an enormous tech revolution where companies work together, not separately, to provide the best user experience possible for the first time.
